The idyllic mountain lake below the Zugspitze may be a very small canoeing lake, but it offers great views. The Eibsee lies at 973 m above sea level with emerald green, crystal-clear water and 8 small islands. Due to its location at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, it is probably the most beautiful and most alpine lake in the Bavarian Alps. It was formed around 3700 years ago by a huge landslide. The name comes from the yew, a type of tree that can only be found very occasionally on the Eibsee today. Anglers fish here for pike, brown trout, whitefish, carp and tench. These usually end up freshly caught on the menus of the surrounding hotels.
